What happened when the FDA noticed the Fleet kidney damage?
In 2008, the FDA announced warnings about Fleet Phospho Soda kidney damage after several people suffered from kidney damage called acute phosphate nephropathy (renal failure). In cases of acute phosphate nephropathy, calcium phosphate crystals deposit in the renal tubules causing kidney failure, which can be permanent. Because of the risk of kidney failure, the FDA decided that the Fleet laxative products should not be used as an over-the-counter drug. Following these FDA warnings, in 2008, CB Fleet Company, Inc. recalled their over-the-counter drugs after several people suffered from Fleet Phospho Soda kidney damage.

Did the Fleet recall – over-the-counter come soon enough?

In fact, Fleet advertised their laxative products for use at very high dosage rates without adequate warnings about the risk of Fleet Phospho Soda kidney damage for years prior to the recall.
