OsmoPrep Lawsuit News 2010
An OsmoPrep lawsuit is a way to seek legal justice for damage caused by OsmoPrep. Filing a lawsuit can compensate you for injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
What is OsmoPrep?
OsmoPrep is a prescription medication manufactured by Salix Pharmaceuticals used to clean your colon before a colonoscopy. OsmoPrep is a medication made with sodium phosphate, which cleans your colon by causing you to have diarrhea. Cleaning your colon helps your doctor see the inside of your colon more clearly during a colonoscopy. OsmoPrep is unique in that it comes in the form of a pill; most colonoscopy preparation drugs are liquid. While it was approved by the FDA in 2006, it has been found to cause kidney problems in some patients. This OsmoPrep kidney damage can be severe, and in December 2008, the FDA issued a “Black Box Warning,” which is its sternest warning for a product. There is no national class action and it is up to individuals who have been harmed by OsmoPrep to initiate their own OsmoPrep lawsuit.
What are the FDA’s Warnings about OsmoPrep?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that you should not take OsmoPrep if:
• you have had a kidney biopsy that shows you have kidney problems because of too much phosphate; or
• you are allergic to sodium phosphate salts or any of the ingredients in OsmoPrep.
To prevent OsmoPrep kidney damage, you should tell your doctor about all of your conditions, previous surgeries, alcohol usage, and diet prior to taking it. You should also tell your doctor about any medications that you are currently taking, whether they are prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs.
OsmoPrep Kidney Damage Complications
When kidneys are not functioning properly, the damage can be severe, including tiredness, shortness of breath, decreased urine output, leg swelling, confusion, seizures, and comas. Some kidney problems can be reversed, but at advanced stages, kidneys may be permanently damaged and may not return to their full functionality. At this stage, one of the only options is to pursue an OsmoPrep lawsuit to achieve adequate compensation for your permanent kidney problems.
Who is at risk for OsmoPrep Kidney Damage?
Conditions that can make you more at risk for having OsmoPrep kidney damage include if you get dehydrated, have constipation, have severe stomach pain or bloating, have any disease that causes bowel irritation (colitis), have kidney disease, have heart failure, or take water pills or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).
