OsmoPrep Lawsuit News
If you have suffered from kidney damage after taking a Fleet, Visicol or Osmoprep oral phosphate product, you may consider filing a claim. An Osmoprep lawsuit can compensate you for your injuries, and, at the same time, hold the company accountable for their products.
OsmoPrep Side Effects – The Tablet Prep
Salix Pharmaceuticals is the manufacturer of OsmoPrep and Visicol. OsmoPrep is also referred to as “The Tablet Prep”. They are both used as bowel preps and on December 11, 2008 the FDA required new warnings after receiving reports of kidney damage. The Osmoprep black box warning and Visicol warning are the strongest warnings that can be placed on a medication.
Fleet Products
Fleet Phospho-soda and Fleet Phospho-soda EZ-Prep Bowel Cleansing System are over-the-counter bowl cleansing drugs used to prepare a patient for a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to inspect the large intestine of the body for polyps and abnormalities. Doctors will often prescribe a colonoscopy to check for colon cancer and pre-cancerous polyps in patients they feel is at-risk.
Prior to a colonoscopy, you doctor will have you take a bowel cleansing solution that clears the bowel. This is necessary because during a colonoscopy, the doctor inserts a camera to take pictures of the inside of the colon, which the doctor can view on a monitor during the exam. This camera is called a “colonoscope” and it cannot take accurate pictures if the bowel is not clear. The colonoscope can also collect samples for biopsies, remove polyps or cauterize areas to stop bleeding.
FDA Warnings and Recall
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that several patients had suffered from kidney problems called acute phosphate nephropathy (renal failure) after taking a Fleet product. In cases of acute phosphate nephropathy, calcium phosphate crystals build up and cause kidney problems, which can be permanent. Because of the risk of severe kidney problems, the FDA decided that the Fleet laxative products should not be used as over-the-counter products.
Osmoprep Black Box
On December 11, 2008 the FDA announced a black box warning for OsmoPrep and Visicol products after receiving reports of acute phosphate nephropathy (kidney damage).
In December 2008, CB Fleet Company, Inc. recalled their over-the-counter drugs, Fleet Phospho-soda and Fleet Phospho-soda EZ-Prep Bowel Cleansing System, after several people suffered from kidney failure. The Fleet recall came after the FDA warnings. Pursuing a Fleet lawsuit is up to the individual who has been harmed by a Fleet product.
Medical Complications
When kidneys are not functioning properly, the damage can be severe, including tiredness, shortness of breath, decreased urine output, leg swelling, confusion, seizures, and comas. Some kidney problems can be reversed, but at advanced stages, kidneys may be permanently damaged and may not return to their full functionality. At this stage, one of the only options is to pursue a fleet lawsuit to achieve adequate compensation for your permanent kidney problems.
